Meet You Down The Front - Part One

I've decided to start reviewing/remembering as many performances by bands, dj's etc that I have seen in my 34 years on this earth. They won't be in any chronological order and will appear whenever my synapses allow the memory fog to lift (wherever and whenever that may be). Let's begin shall we.....

1. Dire Straits (1986) - OK, let's get the skeletons out of the cupboard. The year was 1986, Dire Straits were probably the biggest band in the world at the time largely thanks to the release of two items - the CD player and the album they released called "Brothers In Arms". These two bedfellows were the absolute pinnacle of bliss for hi-fi salesmen the world over and the stand-alone guitar break in Money For Nothin' was the key point where the guy in the store would crank the big volume knob with a deft flick of the wrist stage right. Your hair would blow back like that yuppie guy seated in the armchair poster seen on many a loungeroom wall throughout the 80's. Hi-Fi guy would have his eyebrows ascending and be urging your amazement with a few rising "Huh? Huhs" and you would be absolutely impressed by the cd's crystaline digital compression (and you can't scratch them, don't you know?).
I do remember once going with my Dad and my high school pal (electronics boffin, Ian) to buy a new set of speakers. We had armed ourselves in advance with a woofer punishing 7" single of Harold Faltermeyer's electro pop masterpiece "Axel F" from the Beverly Hills Cop film soundtrack; sure to put any Japanese devised amplification to the ultimate test. But I digress.
I first heard Dire Straits via my old man's copy of the self titled album that the band issued in the UK in 1978 (it was like punk never happened) but that was the only contact I'd had until a couple of schoolmates - the afore mentioned Ian and another guy called Phil (who was into ropey jazz of the 80's persuasion) - got right into Dire Straits and took me along for the ride. But hey, I wasn't the only Australian swept up in the anarchy, madness and pure sexuality that was created by a middle-aged balding guy with a signature headband who mumbled all of his songs and spend a lot of time fiddling around at the "business" end of the Stratocaster fretboard. Along with the band of 4 others guys, the names of whom NOBODY could tell you - even with a gun to their head, Mark Knopfler managed to play the cavernous dome of reverb and poor vision that is the Sydney Entertainment Center for 20 nights IN A ROW. Holy shit.
They were bigger than vegemite and pretty much the whole of Australia saw them. For a kid (me) who'd been listening solidly to punk, ska and uk/sydney indie bands who could hardly play their instuments since I was in year 7, this was a new world. I probably played the air guitar to Money For Nothin' along with 5,000 other male guitar worshipping dags, and I recall the lighting being pretty dramatic also, with dry ice and the lot. It was my first time at the Ent Cent...but not my last, as we shall discover in future reviews. All in all it was a popular phenomenom that I was a part of and although it didn't change my life in any way, I have fond memories of the night itself with my friends from school all hittin' the big city together (pretty heady stuff for a buch of Camden lads). We did not, unfortunately, get any "chicks for free" as promisedby Mr.Knopfler & Co.

2. New Order (1986) - Now we're talking. An absolutely memorable experience for me. Seeing this legendary band at the height of their powers at the Enmore theatre was the coolest thing I had EVER witnessed in my 15 years of living. Joined again by Ian (see Dire Straits review above) as well as two other cohorts, Paul & Dick, I can clearly recall being a) the only people dropped off by our parents and b) the only people not wearing black. We probably looked like the freaks.
The support act was The Deadly Hume (who's rock tree later branched out to Ratcat, Nick Barker etc) and they had a rather large live spider in a class container with a light shining underneath it, giving the spider's shadow a huge wall sized projection. I remember thinking that was cool.
New Order came on with minimal fuss but maximum sound. It was the Brotherhood album they were touring, but we were also treated to a nice selection of older tunes. Of course, hearing " Blue Monday/The Beach" live was really, really exciting.
A few things that stand out in my mind were the way Stephen Morris did drum with the sound and precision of an actual drum machine, the way Gillian Morris was so shy that she couldn't bear to look up from her single fingered keyboard lines, the way Hooky slung his bass guitar almost to floor level and played it like a leaden beast and the way "Barney" Sumner would sing with his eyes closed for every song, not caring when he strained his limited voacals to hit the high notes entirely off key. Oh yeah, I also remember turning around at one point to see a guy standing on the railing of the Enmore's top balcony dancing in only his underpants. That, and a vague recollection of one of my mates losing a shoe or somebody slicing their foot open on a bottle are coming to me as well, but I'll have to get verification on that one.
Incidently, it would be another 17 (!) years until I saw New Order again, when in 2003, Ange and I had been to see David Byrne (review to appear in the future) at the State Theatre, and driving home, we passed by the Horden where New Order were performing. We stopped the car, bum-rushed the gates and caught the encore of "Blue Monday" and "Love Will Tear Us Apart"!

Obsessions No.1 - The first in a new series

I love magazines. I love their versatility, ease of transport, the smell, the gloss (or matte) of the pages and the way they make public transport bearable. I love the sense of pleasure and pain that comes from devouring a great mag, amd the bittersweet feeling that comes once you have read every article, editorial, letters column, picture caption that there is to read - and so you read it all over again.
Magazines are a guilty pleasure because they are all pretty much an expensive purchase; except, of course several great free mags (more on those later). My love for magazines started when i was very young and went hand in hand with getting into music and film. I remember the joys of the TV Week posters featuring my obsession at the age of 10 - KISS - and later the biting satire and social commentry of MAD magazine (and to a lesser extent, CRACKED) a lot of which I only half understood. However, the sexual undertones and the general nose-thumbing of the media and the world at large displayed in MAD was a huge excitement to a very adolescent mind. It displayed an almost radical way of thinking that fell in with the hippy/yippy cultures of the 60's (even though this subculture was viciously and regularly sniggered at within the MAD pages) and made me see the world in a whole new light.
I remember the first magazine that appeared in our house with a regular thump was my Mum's then fave, the good old Women's Weekly, spearheaded by Ita Buttrose in the late 70's and then by Maggie Tabberer in the 80's. I would have read them, just as I would always perouse the Reader's Digest in the Dentist's waiting room. My passion for magazines was well and truly cemented. Ask any guy you know about waiting for a seat in the barber's chair and he will instantly recall the smell of disenfectant, brylcreem and The Australia Post magazine. A pretty raw and rural affair, it was one place you could sit and read a magazine that contained pretty innocent photos of topless lasses without fear of feminist retribution or your parent's dissaproval. Now don't get me wrong, I'm not advocating the depiction of women in hard-hats with their "ahem" top floor construction on display, but at 12 years old, you certainly aren't attempting in any way shape or form to uphold a sense of the moral fibre now, are you?
Magazines are a way of staying in touch with the latest and greatest. They are a great source of dinner conversation starters, heresay and general hipness to what's going on in a global sense. The writers of these sometimes shallow tomes want you to feel how much their hipness is hurting them, and in turn, they want you to feel it too. That's essentially why we buy magazines. They allow us to feel like we are the first to find out, that it's our private little insight into privvy popular culture and that nobody else knows this amazing new trivial piece of whatever.
Of course, not all magazines have a coolness factor as their foundation. New Scientist, Time etc are informative periodicals that are hoping to shed a light on certain topics that may or may not improve on how we as individuals see/treat the world at large. However, it is still an opinion, therefore they share a commonality with the glossies and the pop mags in so much as they want you to feel something personal and intimate when you have read their articles. Otherwise, why buy the product? Hey, I'm digresseing a bit here, aren't I? Getting back to the mags that mean something to me, I will now give you my Top Nine Magazines (in no particular order) and hopefully you can discover something new and exciting to spend even more consumer dollars on for yourself. (See, I'm part of the big magazine conspiracy I mentioned earlier and I didn't even mean to be. Sneaky sods!)

09. MONSTER CHILDREN (AUSTRALIA)This local design/skate/surf/oz culture 'zine is well layed out, beautifully printed and it has a great portrait styled format. I discovered it in my local newsagents by chance one day and I've since collected every issue. It's a really nice coffee table piece of eye candy featuring some excellent local and overseas graphics and photo essays, rants, interviews, cool collectables and street fashion etc. I also discovered that the editor's parents were good friends with my Mum & Dad in the 70's - small world, eh? $10 at your local yokel - grab one today!
08. THE BIG TAKEOVER (USA) Indie rock, punk, 60's, leftfield electronics, post rock, jazz, soundtrack, re-issue heaven! This is one big heavy read with a no-nonsense approach to printing and production, but with a big ol' chunk of amazing articles/interviews and reviews up the wahoo....this baby'll keep you company in the dunny for at least a month (maybe two if you're a long sitter).
07. WAX POETICS (USA) - Or "Waxy Po" as my mate Sinclair refers to it. This is what is known as a "periodical" ie: it comes out roughly 4-5 times a year, and usually when you least expect it. This is one for the beat heads, jazzers, hip hop fiends, and vinyl junkies. It contains in-depth looks at musicians and producers as well as thoughtful essays on culture, music and society. The artwork and layout is done with a cool sophisticated street vibe, drawing obvious parallels to the culture from whence it was spawned. I love this mag - it's one to keep for years to come. There's no way I'd throw an issue of this away, nor would I lend it out to anyone as it would be coveted (read: stolen) for sure. A true work of 'zine art. Love it.
06. MOJO (UK) - The music nerd's bible and the only mag I have an actual subscription to (a birthday present from my beautiful wife, Angelina). Ange reckons that every issue has Brian Wilson or the Beatles on the cover, and she's only half wrong. This mag is a great resource for music both new and old, largely written/reviewed by guys old enough to be your Dad. But don't let that put you off. Sure, there is the odd sycophantic rant over something as obnoxious as the entire Genesis back catalogue being re-issued on 29 kg sensurround, scented vinyl, but for the most, it's a great read from cover to cover with at least 2 killer in depth articles in every issue that make you wanna go out and buy that artist's entire catalogue. Available evrywhere.
05. CYCLIC DEFROST (AUS) - Anyone who knows their arse from their elbow in Australia (and now globally) will have already picked up this countries' best free 'zine at their nearest discerning record store/cafe/clothes store. Put together by Seb Chan (of Sub Bass Snarl) and Dale Harrison (bass lord of the sith) Cyclic is well designed, chock-full o'goodness in it's interview and review content and always has the best cover art of any free mag you care to put it up against. They have their own cd club you can subscibe to and recieve great new sounds in your mailbox and they were seemingly obsessed by the Indian cricket team for some time. They probably still are. Online version available here if you miss it in the stores.
04. EMPTY (AUS) - Put together by the oh-so-cool kids at Design Is Kinky, this is a local graphics/photography/Illustration showcase that is as equally inspiring as it is well crafted and put together. It not only features the best in modern overseas giants of the design world, but allows equal if not, greater, page space to local young Aussies with an itchy mouse finger and a head full of ideas. Second only to Refill in this country for quality eye-candy.
03. REFILL (AUS) - OK, so $40 ain't a cheap mag, but when it only comes out a couple of times a year and it looks this good - it's a no brainer when handing over the hard fought readies. I know that in my office, we are constantly referencing this mag (no, not stealing from it!) each time a new brief with any scope for grooviness crosses the desk. Hands down, a world class design book - usually in some unique packaging with limited edition blah to accompany it (postcards, mousepads, posters etc). Get it in Sydney at Stereo in the Galleries Victoria or at Published Art. Other states, please check their website.
02. UGLY THINGS (UK) - Seek this only if you like the sounds of the dirty old 60's garage bands and the pre/post psychedelic movements in music. As thick as a brick with so many reviews and articles, you'll be glad this mag only comes out a few times a year. UT started out as a small fanzine style read, and even now with it's vastly expanded volume and readership, it maintains the look and feel of a true fan's legacy to all that is great about this period in music. Focusing on the cultish and obscure acts of the day, this excellent mag can be found at Redeye in the city from time to time, or wherever discerning throwbacks and mushroom headz are lurking these days.
01. MESS + NOISE (AUS) - The new kid on the block dressed in purple Cons and thick glasses for the most part is this wonderful free indie mag that has appeared of late. Now into it's second (by my count) issue, this is an indie mag for grown ups who love good music, but don't nessesarily feel the need to be on the scene 24/7 (disclaimer: if you are young, hip, happening and beautiful, feel free to scoff and enjoy your superior status for as long as you can). Great layout, beautiful rose tinted dusky photography akin to a Sebadoh album cover - you get the picture. Online version available also.
A great read - and it's friggin' free!

New Films

Here are some films that will be hitting our shores really soon that could be worth a look in...click on the titles to view the trailers.

Thumbsucker - directed by graphic artist wunderkind Mike Mills. Don't let the fact that Canoe Reeves is featured scare you off - if the film is anythimg like his art, it's sure to be a quirky visual feast.

King Kong - After revisiting the Lord Of The Rings trilogy recently, I realised what a mammoth effort and vision that director Peter Jackson achieves with his film making. The trailer to this classic tale of the giant ape looks as epicly impressive as The Ring trilogy. Definitely one for fans of fantasy, adventure and Mr.Jackson. As a matter of interest, the analysis of the racial metaphors contained within this story can be read here in an essay by David R. Rosen taken from the Jump Cut site which reviews contemporary media.

Palindromes - The new film from Todd Salondz hits our screens today. It is another challenging look at the human frailties/quirks and the conditions we all share, but are often too blinkered to face. 8 different actors playing the role of one 13 year old girl is interesting film making to say the least. With his previous indie hits "Welcome To The Dollhouse" (my fave), "Hapiness" and "Storytelling" Salondz divided audiences and critics alike with many walkouts as well as scathing reviews questioning the morality and confronting nature of these films. Palindromes will no doubt be more of the delicious same from TS.

Pretty Persuasion - I seem to be on a role with the (lazy film reviewing tem alert!) "quirky" suburban character driven films, but hey, they get me every time. Along the lines of "Election", this film is centered in a high school and follows the trials and tribulations of a minxy girl played by Even Rachel Wood (great indie-cult-princess-in-the-making name, fer shur) who comes up with a ploy to ensnare one of her teachers with claims of hanky panky (I promise never to use that term ever again). The film touches on racism and class structures, but as i haven't seen this, or any of the films I am mentioning, that's all i can tell you apart from the fact that it could be fun.

The Chumscrubber - Another indie flick set in suburban hell/bliss (whichever way you see it). If this trailer doesn't do the job of conveying the tone, click here for a review I found online which claims this film to hold a candle to Donnie Darko, American Beauty and Election. Directorial debut from Arie Posin.

Me and You and Everyone We Know - OK, this is the last pre/post/pubescent indie flick review i am gonna post today. This film won several awards at some festival somewhere, and it again focuses on a young man's grappling with his being and the need to have a meaningful existence along with the emotions of his overprotective parents' longing for him to stay all theirs blah blah blah. Looks good, but.

Coming Up:Superpitcher at Glitch

I was so happy to catch the final "Glitch" fill-in show from Matt & Dave on FBi's Wednesday Sunset and was treated to hearing the awesome tune that is "Tell Me About It" - the musical highlight of my week!
Their club night Glitch makes a much-anticipated return this September with Superpitcher(Aksel Schaufler), one of the favourite sons of Germany's super-label, Kompakt. I've not been to any of these parties, but upon haring what a sterling talent that Mr. Schaufler is on the decks, i might have to drag out the dusty old dancing slippers from under the couch.

Superpitcher will be playing at Glitch on 3 September at Bohem. Check out this recent Superpitcher DJ Set from August 4th , 2005, to whet yer whistle.

Vertigo Reaches New Lows

The 3 piece group Low have been creating a quiet storm for some years now with their slow-burning, ethereal, hypnotic avant pop. Late night listening is recommended when it comes to Low, or do as I did and use their music to accompany your next road/train journey, particularly if going it solo. Alan Sparhawk and Mimi Parker formed the band in Minnesota during 1994. Along with bassist Zak Sally, they have released 7 studio albums to date and have recorded for great labels such as Shimmy Disc, Kranky & Sub Pop. If minimalistic instrumentation with a controlled energy, coupled with gorgeous, sometimes whispered vocal harmonies is your thing, then get Low. My personal fave is the album "Secret Name" from 1999 - start here and you can do no wrong. Low played a couple of years ago at the Metro here in Sydney and they were awesome.

THE MAGIC NUMBERS - THE MAGIC NUMBERS (Heavenly Recordings)
Every once in a while, an album comes along that gets into your mind, body and soul and you recognise it as one of those moments that reaffirms exactly why music really matters as much as you always believed it to. Hyperbole aside, the self titled debut from the UK's Magic Numbers really is one such recording. Revivalism of the classic sounds of past decades in music can often be an excersise in triteness or simply a bandwagon- jumping cash cow with a whole lot of style over substance.
Trinidadian born Romeo Stodart, drummer pal Sean and their two equally talented sisters Michelle and Angela make up this unique band whose warm, intimate sounds evoke the classic late sixties/early seventies songwriters and vocal groups without a hint of any such behaviour. These are songs that grow with each listen, both in their lyrical and melodic subtlties as well as their ability to really make you feel the heart that seems to flow so effortlessly from their acoustically soaked songs of love and life. Melecholic, sure. Life affirming, most definately.
The ghosts of the classic period Kinks, Neil Young, Mamas and Papas and Phil Spector to name but a few, are all present here and embelish the groups wonderous vocal harmonising with a timelessness lacking in the much adored UK acts such as Oasis or even Coldplay.
The Magic Numbers deserve to be huge. They haven't escaped the attention of the collaboration-savvy Chemical Brothers, and are already becoming a big noise on the UK festival circuit. I love this album and I'm already looking forward to the band's next efforts to see if they can take on the huge challenge of bettering surely this year's most impressive debut rock release.

I am excited to announce that I shall be presenting a session of Sunday Night At The Movies on the 22nd of May, where I'll be playing the album "Dreamies" created by Bill Holt in the early 70's. Fingers crossed, I'll be playing an interview with Bill, as I have been conversing with him for a few weeks online, and I will play the album in it's entirety. here are two reviews to wet your appetite:

From Popshot - Way back in '73, Philadelphian Bill Holt quit his office job, bought a moog, an acoustic guitar, and a four-track reel to reel. Frustrated by the Vietnam war and the death of the sixties, and inspired by the music of John Cage and the Beatles, he was intent on crafting his own music, even if no one ever heard it. The result of those one-man basement sessions has now been reissued for all to behold.
And from Acid Archives - Wow....Where to start? This is an amazing record....It's musique concrete, it's psychedelic, it's acid folk. Imagine if, after "Either/Or", Elliot Smith had teamed up with the Olivia Tremor Control rather than John Brion. Holt sings in a sparse, mournful whisper. He coats his acoustic ballads with a barrage of radio and TV samples: JFK speech excerpts, Vietnam reports, commercials, etc. An added element of quirkiness is the constant squawking/bleeping from the Moog. The overall effect is startlingly modern; It's almost impossible to fathom that a man who had no musical background simply created this work in his basement nearly thirty years ago.
As with any "avant-garde" type record, there are only two "tracks." The different songs simply blend into each other; guitar strumming segues into electric drones and radio snippets, then back into another plaintive ballad. Towards the end, Holt adds random household noises into the mix as the record finds its way to a sluggish, trance-like conclusion. Granted, the juxtaposition of a popcorn popper and moog oscillations may sound pretentious enough, but disbelief is shorn away. You just lose yourself in the wonder of a man innocently stumbling into brilliant ideas; all the while his wife is probably upstairs wishing he would cut that racket out. Thankfully that racket is ours now.
This was intended as a serious reconstruction of the concept of pop music. Bill Holt, just past the age of 30, quit his job and devoted an entire year of his life to this ambitious musical collage, which is alternately fascinating and tedious at more than 50 minutes. There’s no question that even the most random-sounding bits and pieces here were planned very carefully and thoughtfully. There are only three real “songs,” which are surrounded and interrupted by spoken news clips and sound effects. The lack of drums dulls the impact of these songs, which are otherwise excellent Beatles-inspired soft-rock. Headphones help; this is not background music and each album side needs to be listened to uninterrupted. The long series of Moog bleeps and blips on side two can be really hypnotic if you’re in the right frame of mind. Like Kraftwerk, Holt had an understanding of how repetition can be used to alter your concept of what music is. Fans of the Church of the Subgenius should love it. This is one of those albums that you won’t listen to often but will really experience in a new way every time you do.

Sure, I know it's been around for a while now, but due to the ridiculous screening time here in sydney (2am - Hah!), I'm guessing a lot of people haven't had a chance to check it out.
For anyone who doesn't know, Larry David was Jerry Seinfeld's co-writer for the entire Seinfeld series and the character of George was based on his real life personality(!). CYE is a darker, more adult version of the Seinfeld brand of humour. The lack of canned studio laughter credits the viewer with a deal of intellegence, and also allows the individual to laugh at the idiosyncracies that THEY find amusing - not what the network is telling you is funny. If you are in Australia, you can pick up series 1-3 for $40 each volume. I got mine at Borders, and I've also seen it for sale at this price at Ezydvd . Highly Recommended.
2. Art & Illustration Blogs - So inspirational and beautifully creative. I had previously only really associated Blogs with music, but today I had a good old dive into some great art sites. Here are a few that I think deserve a mention: Robot Johnny, Drawn (Exellent site - great links), & Illustration Friday (invites participants to post their drawings for all to share). As I said, these sites and links will keep you amazed for hours - enjoy!
3. Maria Full Of Grace - This film from writer/director Joshua Marston had me enthralled from start to finish. The tale of Maria, a young Columbian girl whose rebellious spirit and humdrum existance, (working in a flower factory and supporting her family), eventually combust, leading her to try the risky endevour of becoming a drug courier, or "mule", between Columbia and New York. What transpires is a stark, but beautifully realised tale of Maria's journey unknown, and the realistic portrayal of a young woman's choices and their outcomes. The lead role of Maria is played by Catalina Sandino Moreno , whose on screen presence and natural beauty is a major feature for the viewer (much in the way that Audrey Tatou was so mesmerising in Amelie). Her believable performance more than deserved the Audience Award it recieved at the Sundance film festival. 10 out of 10.
4. New Trainers - Everybody loves putting on new shoes. Am I right, or am i right?
5. The Irresistible Force - Also known as Mixmaster Morris, the Irresitible Force was a leading light in what was the original "chill out" or ambient electronica sound of the mid Nineties. Known for his long, spacey and very warm tunes, Morris has been a bit quiet of late - his last album release was on the UK label Ninja Tune back in 1998 (!) titled "It's Tomorrow Already". He has released 5 full length albums and a string of ep's and 12"s. A popular collaboration choice, Morris worked with everyone from Coldcut, to the Orb and The Aphex Twin as well as Fax records mainman, Pete Namlook. I feel his music has been largely overlooked and that it is time that this odd looking electronic pioneer recieved his dues. Watch this space for further updates and tune in to Vertigo for a sample of the great man's sounds!

1. Fly By Night Art Bands - Yeah, you know the types - Suddenly appear out of nowhere, hyped to the max and with the right haircuts, androgeny and 'tude. Basically these bands make a whole lotta shouty-assed noise about nothing, disguising a weak lyric content and vocal prowess by pushing everything into the red on the mixdown. Popular, sure. Any good? Nope, not really.
Who was I talking about? Oh, I've forgotten them already.
2. Free To Air TV - Treating us with disdain and discrediting our very consciousness.
I love a bit of the ol' Boob Tube as much as the next guy/girl - but c'mon! Channel 9, I'm looking at you.
3. Young Dudes In Hot Cars - Spent too much money on a sick set of alloys and only had enough cash left to buy Shitz Mix 5 from 2001 to pump out to the masses via their Subs. Awesome.
4. My Own Laziness - Sure, I work hard enough, but still....Right now there's probably 10 other more important things I should be doing, one of which is getting to grips with HTML so's I can make this site behave the way I want it to. Why aren't I doing them you ask? Why are you reading this? Get busy, G!
5. Typing - I want the future to arrive sooner. Preferably at exactly the time when I can just think a word and it appears on screen. As long as it doesn't involve electrodes attached to my brain, of course.

On Tuesday night, we went to see one of my favourite comedians in the world - Maria Bamford. Hailing from Minnesota in Northern America, Maria is a woman on the verge of a nervous breakdown with a very wry line in spotting the neurosies in herself, her family members and the world at large. Perhaps what strikes you most about Maria when you first hear her performance is her child-like speaking voice, which apparently a lot of people assume she is putting on for effect. As she points out, of all the tones in the world she could choose to affect as her normal voice, why in hell would she "pretend" to claim that one as her own?
Indeed, most of Ms.Bamford's show revolves around her remarkable use of voices and the ability to impersonate those around her. The fact that you have never actually met these people in the real world makes no difference to the comedy, as she exagerates them in such a way that they become a "type" of person, and one we have all met at one point or another in our lives.
Her stories are tragi-comedic with a deliciously dark side to them, and she holds the crowd well from the moment she starts talking, as the enigmatic voices start immediately and you find yourself wanting more and more as the madness unfolds.
I really enjoyed this show and I would recommend her to anyone who likes The Simpsons, Seinfeld or Curb Your Enthusiasm. The venue was The Studio at The Opera House - a great place to see any performance in an intimate mode.

"How can you argue with a comp of totally obscure, French and Belgian and French Canadian, late sixties / early seventies psychedelic rock? Especially when you most likely haven't heard of a single one of these artists, and the cover features people in bear suits IN space suits hanging out on the moon and the disc art features a band dressed up like psychedelic Indians and the songs are so completely whacked and weird? Well, you can't. Nor should you. Why deny yourself the drugged out damaged beauty contained herein? Eighteen tracks of completely out-there psych rock, rife with all sort of wild and wooly outerspace effects, funky horns, fuzzy lead guitars, hooks galore and sung mostly in French!The opening track by P.B. + 3 1/2 is a funky soft porn soundtrack (well, sounds like it, the liner notes assure us it is not even though the artist did indeed to porn sountracks) slowly loping bassline and the melody played by a kazoo. Yep, a kazoo. Complete with summery feel-good background vocals and bizarre Perrey And Kingsley sound effects. Apparently P.B moved to L.A. and recorded music for Star Trek: The Next Generation! Track two is just as wacked with a total head nodding groove, the main riff played on a violin and booming Morricone choral style men's choir background vocals, swirling cinematic strings and a wailing Scott Walker-ish vocal, super dramatic and WAY over the top. The third track is a fuzzy, psychedelic girl-group-groove from Sixties French pop idol Stella, a totally guitar heavy workout, with a super Hendrixy 'scuse me.. type riff, kick ass horns and her throaty, over affected vocals, but totally catchy and wonderful. And the whole record continues in the same fashion, Just when you think it couldn't get weirder or cooler, it does. Big time! Partridge Family style Sixties summer pop, dipped in acid and left to fry in the sun, keyboard heavy ? And The Mysterians style repeating grooves dissembled and put together again like some psych rock Frankenstein and on and on and on...We get flooded with comps of 'lost classics', but this one definitely holds up as one of our favorites (and definitely one of the most bizarre). All the tracks were collected by some guy named Satan Belanger, a legendary underground musician and record collector in Quebec. Really funny liner notes too, in both French and English, though we could have used even more info. Highly recommended!"

After last week's show at FBi, Angelina and I dropped into the Annandale Hotel to catch the pure pop genius that is Ken Stringfellow. Ken was taking time out as acting keyboard player for REM on their current world tour to play some solo spots around the country. For anyone who isn't familiar with the work of KS - here is a bio courtesy of the great AMG site:

Ken Stringfellow is co-founder of one of the most critically acclaimed power pop bands of the '90s, the Posies. Formed in Bellingham, WA, in 1989 with Jon Auer, the two created a demo tape in Auer's parents' basement and sent it to PopLlama Records in Seattle. The tape was well received and they released as their first album, Failure. They signed with Geffen's DGC label and released three albums that were revered by music critics but went unnoticed by the general public. Upset that the Posies weren't selling as well as DGC's other Seattle-based bands, their label dropped them after the release of their third album. The Posies went on to release a final LP, Success, on PopLlama Records, before they broke up in 1998. Both Auer and Stringfellow joined Alex Chilton's Big Star in the early '90s and have toured off and on with them as well.
Stringfellow moved on to several different projects after the dissolution of the Posies. He formed the now-defunct band Saltine, a promising power pop band that broke up after releasing only one EP. Stringfellow began touring as an additional musician with R.E.M. in 1998 and has appeared on their most recent album, Reveal. Stringfellow has been involved with many other bands as well as the Posies, including Twin Princess with Seattle artist Bootsy Holler, the Orange Humble Band, Lagwagon, and Chariot. He released a solo album in 1997, This Sounds Like Goodbye. Stringfellow has also been involved with Scott McCaughey's ongoing project, the Minus Five, since its inception. Stringfellow and his partner in crime from the Posies, Jon Auer, released a post-Posies EP in March 2001, and joined up for a sometimes acoustic, sometimes full-band Posies tour the same year. Stringfellow released Touched in 2001, his second solo album, which included many songs intended for Saltine. In 2004 he released Soft Commands, a new collection that featured songs recorded in various studios around the world.

We arrived at 9.30, after Vertigo, and to our dissapointment, Ken had already taken the stage for the early set. We did manage to catch 4 songs from his recent solo albums, which is what I had hoped to hear, particularly the songs from the 2001 album "Touched". His Mum and Stepdad, Dewey were in the crowd, as Dewey was celebrating his 80th birthday. It was a nice touch when Ken dedicated the song "Here's To The Future" to him, as it added to the singer/songwriters' already heartfelt and honestly emotional approach to his songs.
Angelina commented that it was like seeing a young Todd Rundgren on stage, as KS sat down solo at the keyboard and deleivered his songs in a voice that, like Todds', is by no means technically brilliant by any stretch of the imagination, but is indeed filled with a raw emotion sometimes lacking in many "bigger" performers.
Following Ken's solo set, Melbourne 3 piece Even played a short set of tunes that was not exactly surprising in tone considering the length of their career, but it was Even delivering their tried and true 60's splashed power pop in their own inimitable form. Ashley Naylor is a fine guitarist and a strong vocalist, but it wasn't really anything I hadn't seen from them before.
Following Even's set, Ken Stringfellow joined them on stage for a last set of rollicking cover versions. There was the ridiculous ("Stairway To Heaven"), a rocking shambles (Neil Young's "Down To The Wire") and the perfect pop that made the night a little bit special - 2 Bee Gees covers, Big Star's "September Girls"(!!), and a vintage Posies track that had fans of Ken's early band pretty buzzed. We enjoyed the show - a great way to end the weekend. I just hope that Ken returns with more of his great tunes again, so I can hear a little more solo magic from this fine pop performer.
